Life is Hard

My daughter Brianna has been the choir director for Sabino High for the past two years. This morning she was called into the Principal's office and given "notice" of intent to let her go. Due to budget cuts they are planning on laying off all 1st and 2nd year teachers in our district. If this was not bad enough Brianna was informed that the discussion of the Site Council is to cut the ENTIRE Choral Program at the High School.

Brianna is an amazing teacher. She has a way of working with her students that helps them express their creativitiy and emotions through the art and dicipline of singing. I was so shocked when she called me this morning. This is a tradegy to lose such a valuable teacher let alone disolve an entire program. The arts are not just a frill, they offer many values to our children.

Let me just vent for just a few minutes on some of the values associated with Fine Art programs.

  • The arts provide an emotional outlet and growth for all who participate.
  • It has long been proven that they help develop thinking patterns that benefit all areas of life.
  • The arts promote discipline and commitment. Just ask Shantell how many hours a day she works at the piano.
  • The arts provide a positive social network.
  • They help students develop teamwork as well as leadership skills.
  • The arts develop skills that will last a lifetime.
  • They open both minds and hearts and leave a lasting impression on all involved
  • The arts add beauty and refinement to the world in which we live.

Can you think of any aspect of your life where the Fine Arts do not play an important role? I personally feel that it is our obligation to protect and nurture the arts in our school systems.

If anyone has suggestions on how we can save our program, please help!

  1. I am sorry Sabrina I don't have a suggestion, but may I add to your list....It has been proven time and time again, that children who participate in Fine Arts programs do better overall academically. You are so right in that this isn't a frill! And yes, the fine arts touch every aspect of our lives. Look around your homes, offices, church buildings...aren't they all filled with beautiful works of art, music to soothe our souls, and our entertainment...hmmm let's see an arts program. Wow, I am afraid I better stop there because my venting will probably get me in trouble. For Tucson school district they are losing an exceptional teacher, too bad for them. May Brianna and her family be able to find the answers to the questions they now have, and may we as parents, teachers and fellow citizens fight to save the programs that will inspire our children!

  2. My heart breaks for Brianna, this is such a tough situation for her, her family, and the students who won't have the benefit of her teaching. It is a sad, sad, situation all the way around. We are thinking of her.

  3. Thank you for your help and support during these trying times! As always, you are a strength to me. We will fight the fight and let our voices be heard at the meetings that are coming up. We will do it peacefully, but hope that we will be able to send a message to all in attendance that night...choir is so important to many of these students, and they are not ready to let it go. Neither am I. Let's save our program for the students today and those in years to come!
